House Arrest of Political Leaders
On Sunday, several political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir were placed under house arrest. This step was taken to stop them from joining a protest against the current reservation policy.
Farooq Abdullah’s Statement
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah defended the house arrests. He said that some leaders want to create unrest in the region, which will not be allowed.
While speaking to reporters in Pahalgam, Abdullah said that these leaders might not be happy with the progress being made in Jammu and Kashmir.
He added, “We are doing our best for development. Some people want turmoil, but we will not allow that.”
Which Leaders Were House Arrested
The leaders placed under house arrest include:
- National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi
- PDP MLA Waheed Para
- Former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Mattoo
- PDP leader Iltija Mufti
Reason Behind the Protest
These leaders had expressed support for students who planned a peaceful protest at Gupkar Road. The protest was against the delay in changing the reservation (quota) policy.
The issue remains unresolved even after one year of forming a committee under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Farooq Abdullah on Bangladesh Situation
Farooq Abdullah also spoke about the situation in Bangladesh. He said he hopes peaceful elections will be held there soon.
He expressed hope that the new government in Bangladesh will continue friendly relations with India.
Reactions from the Leaders
PDP MLA Waheed Para said it was unfortunate that leaders were stopped from supporting students.
Meanwhile, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi posted on X (Twitter) that armed police were deployed outside his house. He questioned whether this was done to silence peaceful, pro-student voices.
